Indian Coast Guard's High-Tech Operation: Disrupting International Oil Smuggling Network off Mumbai Coast

High-tech surveillance led to the interception of three vessels off the coast of Mumbai by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in a successful operation on February 6. The operation dismantled an international oil smuggling network involved in the illegal transfer of oil and oil-based cargo. Commandant Amit Uniyal highlighted the intricate sea-air coordinated surveillance and enforcement mission executed nearly 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai, showcasing the technological and operational prowess of the force.

The syndicate had devised a sophisticated modus operandi to smuggle large quantities of low-cost oil from conflict-ridden regions, transferring it at sea to motor tankers in international waters to evade customs duties and regulatory scrutiny. The operation was triggered after ICG's tech-inclusive maritime surveillance systems detected a motor tanker engaged in suspicious movements within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), leading to the interception of all three vessels involved in the illicit ship-to-ship transfer of oil-based cargo.

Specialist boarding teams deployed by the Indian Coast Guard carried out rummaging operations, verification of ship documents, scrutiny of electronic navigation and communication data, and detailed interrogation of crew members. The vessels were found to have frequently changed their identities to evade tracking and law enforcement action by multiple coastal states. Preliminary investigations revealed that the owners of the vessels are based in foreign countries, highlighting the international dimension of the smuggling racket.

Following the confirmation of illegal activity, the vessels were apprehended and are likely to be escorted to Mumbai for comprehensive investigation. They will subsequently be handed over to Indian Customs and other law enforcement agencies for further legal action. Commandant Amit Uniyal emphasized the Indian Coast Guard's role as a key enforcer of maritime law and a provider of maritime security in the region, reinforcing India's commitment to upholding the international rules-based order at sea and combating transnational maritime crime.

The successful operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard's continued efforts against smuggling, economic offenses, and non-traditional maritime threats, demonstrating India's vigilance across its vast maritime domain. The interception of the three vessels off the Mumbai coast is a significant achievement in the fight against illegal activities at sea, showcasing the effectiveness of high-tech surveillance and enforcement measures in safeguarding maritime security.
