The Unlikely Beginnings of a Legendary Rock Band: The Story of KISS

In the early 1970s, Peter Criss received a surprising phone call from Gene Simmons, who was interested in more than just his drumming skills. Simmons asked Criss about his appearance, including his hair, willingness to wear dresses, high heels, and lipstick. This unusual conversation marked the beginning of the formation of a legendary rock band.

After placing an ad in Rolling Stone following the breakup of his previous bands, Chelsea and Lips, Criss caught the attention of Simmons and Paul Stanley. Intrigued by Simmons' questions, Criss agreed to meet them, feeling that there was something unique about the opportunity.

When Criss arrived at Electric Lady Studios in New York, Simmons was impressed by his rock star appearance in clothes from London. The band still needed a lead guitarist, and Ace Frehley's audition, complete with a motorcycle jacket and mismatched sneakers, immediately won them over.

Inspired by the individual fan followings of the Beatles, the band decided to create their own distinct personas through makeup and characters. Drawing from the Beatles' concept, they added a theatrical flair to their image, experimenting with makeup and developing characters like the Catman, The Demon, Starchild, and Spaceman.

With Eric Singer eventually taking over as drummer and continuing the Catman persona, the band, known for their iconic makeup and stage presence, performed their final show in 2023. The legacy of their theatrical rock performances continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
