Texas Education Freedom Accounts: Empowering Parents with School Choice

Texas parents now have the opportunity to apply for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts, a new private school voucher program for the 2026-27 school year. The program, which offers subsidies for private school tuition, was passed by the Texas Legislature last year after several unsuccessful attempts. Governor Greg Abbott has been a strong advocate for school choice, emphasizing the importance of giving parents control over their children's education. However, some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the potential impact on public education funding and rural communities without access to private schools.

Under the new law signed by Governor Abbott, parents who apply may receive a voucher of nearly $10,500 for private school tuition, which is estimated to cover 85% of state and local funding per student annually. The program, administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, also provides financial support for homeschooling costs and children with disabilities enrolled in private prekindergarten or kindergarten programs.

Applications for the program are open from February 4 to March 17, and can be submitted through the program's website. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or lawful Texas residents, and their parents must be Texas residents. Required documentation includes social security numbers, tax returns, and proof of Texas residency. The application process is expected to take about 10 to 20 minutes.

Parents applying for children with disabilities must provide certification of the disability, evaluations, or an individualized education plan. Priority for funding will be given to children from households with lower annual incomes, with a cap of $1 billion for the program's initial years.

Families who receive funding will need to apply separately to eligible private schools, as not all schools participate in the voucher program. Schools must meet specific criteria, including accreditation by recognized organizations. Funding recipients will be notified in April 2026 and will receive disbursements in installments throughout the year for various educational expenses.

The funds can be used for tuition, uniforms, textbooks, tutoring, assessments, therapies, technology, and school meals, but cannot be used for personal expenses or payments to family members. Any remaining funds can be carried over to the following year. Parents in good standing will remain eligible for the program, ensuring continued support for their children's education.
