Freeze Watch Alert: Cold Front Approaching Florida-Georgia Border

A significant cold front is approaching the Florida-Georgia border, leading to a Freeze Watch for various counties in northeast Florida, north-central Florida, and southeast Georgia. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville predicts overnight temperatures to plummet to around 29 degrees late Thursday into Friday morning. The Freeze Watch encompasses a broad area, including counties like Suwannee, Baker, Union, Bradford, Gilchrist, Alachua, Putnam, Marion, Columbia, and Duval in Florida, as well as inland and coastal regions of southeast Georgia, such as Ware, Charlton, Camden, Glynn, Wayne, Bacon, Appling, and Pierce.

The coldest conditions are anticipated inland, particularly in communities near major highways like I-10, I-75, US-301, and I-95. Cities like Gainesville, Lake City, Live Oak, Starke, Ocala, Waycross, Jesup, Kingsland, and Folkston could experience sub-freezing temperatures for several hours before sunrise on Friday. Cold-related issues on bridges, overpasses, and rural roads are also possible during the early morning hours.

While a widespread hard freeze is not expected, even brief exposure to temperatures below freezing can harm delicate plants and early crops. Vulnerable populations, including outdoor pets, young children, the elderly, and those without shelter, should take precautions during these conditions. Residents are advised to protect sensitive vegetation, bring pets indoors, and insulate outdoor plumbing where feasible. Travelers should prepare for cold weather and allow extra time if passing through colder inland areas on Friday morning.

As the sun returns later on Friday morning, temperatures are forecasted to rise, eliminating the freeze threat by mid-morning. However, there is a possibility of the Freeze Watch being upgraded to a Freeze Warning as more information becomes available. Stay updated as colder air settles in, and residents in the Florida-Georgia border area should remain vigilant through Thursday night.
