Draft Environmental Assessment for Lake Chelan Airport Runway Relocation Project
The City of Chelan, in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and J-UB Engineers, Inc., has published a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Lake Chelan Airport Runway Relocation Project. The EA is a planning document that assesses potential environmental and community impacts without authorizing any specific project actions or construction.
An Environmental Assessment is a necessary planning tool under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to evaluate the impacts of a proposed action before any decisions are made. The EA considers potential impacts, alternatives, mitigation measures, and allows for public input to inform future decision-making by the FAA.
The completion of the EA does not commit the City or FAA to any construction or project implementation. No physical changes would occur solely based on the EA. The Draft EA is open for public review and comment until February 27, 2026. The study area covers approximately 209 acres and evaluates elements related to a conceptual runway relocation. The Draft EA can be accessed at various locations in Chelan and online, with comments accepted via email.
The EA is an initial step in a long-term planning process. Following the public comment period, the FAA will review all comments and determine if additional analysis is required. Any future project steps would necessitate separate approvals, funding decisions, and further public engagement.
