Rivals: The 4 Nations Face-Off - A Documentary on Ice Hockey, Politics, and Patriotism

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brushed off comments made by then-President-elect Donald Trump during the 2024 Four Nations international ice hockey tournament. Trump had referred to Trudeau as the "governor" of the "Great State of Canada," prompting a defiant response from Trudeau and Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk, who altered the lyrics of the national anthem in protest.
The tournament, which featured teams from Canada, the USA, Finland, and Sweden, saw intense competition and a surge of patriotic fervor among Canadians in response to Trump's provocative remarks. The rivalry between Team Canada and Team USA took center stage, culminating in an overtime victory for Canada led by Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid.
The upcoming documentary, Rivals: The 4 Nations Face-Off, directed by Yon Motskin and produced by Blink49 Studios, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the tournament and includes interviews with NHL players and commentators discussing the event's cultural and political significance. Executive produced by Motskin, P.K. Subban, and Jennifer Dettman, the film will premiere on CBC on Feb. 5, offering viewers a unique perspective on the tournament ahead of the Winter Olympics in Italy.
The documentary's release follows the success of another Canadian ice hockey project, Heated Rivalry, a popular gay hockey romance series available on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the United States. The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament not only showcased the competitive spirit of international ice hockey but also highlighted the unity and pride of Canadians in the face of political challenges.
