Comedian Ben Bankas Faces Backlash and Cancellations in Minnesota: The Controversy and Fallout

A comedy club in Minnesota canceled six sold-out shows by comedian Ben Bankas following backlash over a stand-up routine where he mocked a woman killed by an ICE agent. Bankas responded to the cancellations in a video on Instagram, expressing his plans to find a new venue for his Minnesota shows.

The controversy stemmed from jokes Bankas made about Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis mother who died during an encounter with immigration authorities. The viral clip of his routine sparked outrage, leading to protests being planned outside his upcoming shows in St. Paul, prompting the club to cancel the performances.

Club owner Bill Collins cited escalating risks, threats, media attention, and civil disorder as reasons for the cancellations. He emphasized the priority of safety for guests, staff, and talent, stating that the club lacked the resources to mitigate the current risks.

The cancellations could cost the club approximately $17,000, and Creative Artists Agency (CAA), representing Bankas, is seeking full compensation for the canceled shows. CAA has also prohibited its other clients from booking the club until the dispute is resolved.

Ben Bankas, originally from Toronto and now based in Austin, Texas, hosts "The Tanakas Show" on YouTube, reaching over 10,000 monthly listeners. The comedian's controversial routine and subsequent cancellations have stirred debate and financial implications for the club and the performer.
