Phil Collins: The Unexpected Lead Singer of Genesis

When Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, the band faced uncertainty about their future. They continued writing music but struggled to find a new vocalist. After considering numerous audition tapes, they realized they already had their new lead singer.

Various vocalists, including Mick Strickland, Nick Lowe, Mick Rogers, and Jahn Teigen, auditioned for the role of lead singer in Genesis. However, it was Phil Collins, who had been teaching the songs to applicants, who eventually stepped up to the role.

Genesis began working on their seventh album, "A Trick Of The Tail," in 1975 with new producer David Hentschel. The recording process was smoother without Gabriel, and the band embraced the opportunity to showcase their songwriting collective.

"A Trick Of The Tail" featured songs like "Dance On A Volcano," "Squonk," and "Entangled," showcasing a dreamy and childlike atmosphere. The album's success proved that Genesis could thrive without Gabriel and reached No.3 in the UK charts.

To perform the album live, Genesis enlisted Bill Bruford as a second drummer for the tour, allowing Collins to focus on his role as the lead singer. Collins' engaging stage presence and ability to connect with the audience helped solidify his position in the band.

Collins' transition to lead singer marked a new chapter for Genesis, setting the stage for their future albums and performances. The band's dynamic shifted, and Collins' influence would shape their sound in the years to come.
