UAE Halts Student Sponsorships in UK Over Radicalization Concerns

A Middle Eastern Muslim-majority country has decided to stop sponsoring students who want to study abroad in the United Kingdom due to concerns about potential radicalization. The United Arab Emirates fears that its students in Britain could be influenced and radicalized by the Muslim Brotherhood, which is considered a terror organization in several Middle Eastern countries and Central Asian nations. While Texas and Florida have labeled the Muslim Brotherhood as a terror group, the federal government has not done so.

The Emirati Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously provided funding for top-performing students pursuing degrees in priority fields, covering tuition, living expenses, travel, and health insurance. However, the country will continue to support students studying in other countries through its state-sponsored study abroad program. Students interested in studying in the UK will now have to finance their education independently.

The UAE has been engaged in a long-standing battle against the Muslim Brotherhood in the Middle East. The country supported Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2013 when he ousted a regime linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. Additionally, the UAE has collaborated with proxies to counter the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen, Chad, and Sudan. Despite the British government's inquiry in 2015 concluding that the Islamist group contradicts British values and may indicate extremism, the UK has not designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

Certain Muslim interest groups in the UK, such as the Muslim Association of Britain, the British Muslim Initiative, and the Islamic Society of Britain, have been suspected of having ties to Muslim Brotherhood ideology. The UAE's decision to limit student sponsorships for studying in the UK reflects its ongoing efforts to combat the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and prevent radicalization among its students abroad.
