Jimmie Johnson Secures Spot in 2026 Daytona 500: Legacy Motor Club's Open Exemption Provisional

Jimmie Johnson has secured a spot in the upcoming 2026 Daytona 500, thanks to Legacy Motor Club obtaining an open exemption provisional. Johnson will be part of the 41-car field on Sunday, February 15, with his starting position likely determined by his performance in the duels. As a result of Johnson's guaranteed spot, seven other drivers will be competing for the remaining four open spots in the race, including Justin Allgaier, Corey Heim, Casey Mears, B.J. McLeod, and J.J. Yeley. Additional entries from Beard Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing are expected.

The open exemption provisional was introduced before last year's Daytona 500 to provide a guaranteed spot for accomplished drivers from various motorsports backgrounds. Trackhouse Racing utilized this provision last year to allow IndyCar Series star Helio Castroneves to compete after a crash in his duel. NASCAR updated the rules in March to ensure a 41-car field when the open exemption provisional is utilized, regardless of qualifying positions.
