Danny Boyle, the director of "28 Days Later," and screenwriter Alex Garland have joined forces once again to create a sequel to their zombie film. The sequel, titled "28 Years Later," is the first installment in a planned trilogy of sequels to "28 Days Later." The second film in the trilogy, "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple," is set to be released on January 16, 2026. Nia DaCosta, known for directing "Candyman" and "The Marvels," has taken over the directorial duties for the sequel. The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple" an R rating ahead of its release.

There is speculation that Danny Boyle may return to direct the third installment in the trilogy, with Cillian Murphy potentially reprising his role from "28 Days Later." Despite the global box office success of "28 Years Later," the film struggled to resonate with audiences. The movie received mixed reviews, with JoBlo's Chris Bumbray giving it a 7/10 rating and Kier Gomes rating it a 6.5.

According to Empire, "The Bone Temple" will delve deeper into the dangers posed by the infected individuals known as the Jimmies. The story will follow young hero Spike as he becomes entangled with the Jimmies, while Dr. Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes, forms an unlikely bond with the Alpha infected Samson. The film will also explore the eccentric belief system of Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by Jack O'Connell, which draws inspiration from pop culture references like Teletubbies, Power Rangers, cricket, and Jimmy Savile.

Director Nia DaCosta described the film as "weird" and "surprising," with moments in the script that left her jaw-dropped. Jack O'Connell expressed pride in the film's unique and shocking nature, rooted in soul and speculative scenarios. "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple" has received an R rating for its intense bloody violence, gore, graphic nudity, language, and brief drug use.
