Adrian Smith's Audition for Def Leppard: A Look Back at the Band's Search for a New Guitarist

Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden shared his experience of trying out for Def Leppard in 1991 after the band lost guitarist Steve Clark. Following Clark's tragic death due to a mix of prescription drugs and alcohol, Def Leppard sought a replacement and invited Smith, among others, to audition for the band. Smith recalled being contacted by Phil Collen and Ross Halfin, flying to L.A., and jamming with the band for a couple of days. Despite enjoying the experience and the band members, Smith ultimately did not join Def Leppard, as his solo album was about to be released. However, he acknowledged that it was worth pursuing the opportunity.

In a later interview, Phil Collen discussed Smith's audition and why Vivian Campbell was chosen as the band's new guitarist. Collen mentioned that they invited five friends to try out, and Campbell immediately clicked with the band's style and vocals. While Smith and other candidates like John Sykes were talented, Campbell's voice and compatibility with the band's sound made him the top choice to replace Clark.

Def Leppard is set to start a residency in Las Vegas on February 3, with plans for a unique show different from their previous performances. Joe Elliott teased that the band has something special in store for the upcoming shows, promising a new experience for fans.
