Florida State University Appoints John Garrett as Deputy AD/GM of Player Personnel: Building a Championship Program with NFL-Style Operations

Florida State University's Vice President and Director of Athletics, Michael Alford, has appointed John Garrett as the Deputy Athletics Director and General Manager of Player Personnel. In this newly established role, Garrett will oversee all aspects of football roster construction, player evaluation, recruiting operations, and NIL integration. With his background at Duke University as the General Manager of Player Personnel, Garrett brings a wealth of experience in college football operations and strategic planning. He will work closely with head football coach Mike Norvell to align Florida State's football program with an NFL-style operational model aimed at maximizing competitive success in the evolving college football landscape.

Garrett's previous experience at Duke involved building successful rosters that secured 17 wins and the 2025 ACC championship. He played a crucial role in roster management, recruiting coordination, and integrating analytics and evaluation processes into football decision-making. Alford emphasized the significance of this appointment, stating that elite programs like Florida State must operate with the same discipline and structure as professional organizations in today's changing college football landscape.

Before his time at Duke, Garrett contributed to FSU's resurgence as the director of scouting for offense during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His efforts focused on implementing an NFL-style evaluation approach, emphasizing disciplined film study, transfer-portal assessment, and roster analysis to support smarter personnel decisions. Garrett's work laid the foundation for the front-office model now adopted by major college football programs.

Garrett's extensive background includes coaching roles at Lafayette College, Oregon State, Richmond, and Virginia, as well as 18 years of experience in the NFL with teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, Arizona Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His return to Florida State signifies a strategic move towards a new football operations model that separates on-field coaching responsibilities from off-field football operations.

Under the new structure, the Deputy AD/GM of Player Personnel will lead roster construction efforts in collaboration with Coach Norvell, focusing on high school recruiting strategy, transfer portal acquisitions, scholarship allocation, and long-term personnel planning. The coaching staff will retain authority over player development, game preparation, culture, and on-field performance. The centralized integration of football NIL, player evaluation, and recruiting analytics aims to ensure alignment, compliance, and competitive efficiency within the program.

Coach Norvell expressed excitement about Garrett's return and the restructuring of player personnel efforts, highlighting the collaborative approach to building a championship program. The emphasis on long-term program health and competitive ambition reflects Garrett's vision for creating a team that consistently competes for championships and makes the Florida State community proud. The proactive adaptation to changes in college athletics, including NIL and the transfer portal, demonstrates Florida State's commitment to providing student-athletes and coaches with the tools needed for success.
