Press Freedom Under Fire: The Marion County Record Raid Documentary Premiering at Sundance

A documentary about the police raid at a Marion County, Kansas newspaper will be featured at the Sundance Film Festival at the end of January. The raid took place in August 2023 at the Marion County Record's newsroom and the home of its 98-year-old co-owner, who passed away from a heart attack the following day. This incident sparked a national conversation about freedom of the press. In November 2025, Marion County agreed to pay $3 million to the small newspaper for the raid. The newspaper is located in a town with a population of just under 2000, situated approximately 150 miles southwest of Kansas City.
