Oprah Winfrey's Weight Loss Journey: From GLP-1 Medication to Finding Freedom in Health

Oprah Winfrey recently shared her experience with taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication in a PEOPLE interview. She admitted feeling nervous about revealing this information, anticipating pushback from others. However, after a few months on the medication, Winfrey decided to stop taking it abruptly on her 70th birthday in January 2024, attempting to prove she could maintain her weight without it.
Struggling with weight for most of her life, Winfrey had a realization during a show about obesity in July 2023. She learned that obesity causes overeating, not the other way around, which was a freeing revelation for her. Despite this newfound understanding, Winfrey wanted to challenge herself to keep the weight off without medication, leading her to stop the injections and focus on a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Over the course of 12 months without the medication, Winfrey gained 20 pounds, realizing that maintaining her weight would be a lifelong commitment. She acknowledged the importance of certain medications for her health, comparing it to her high blood pressure medication. Understanding her body's natural weight set point at 211 pounds, Winfrey recognized the necessity of the GLP-1 medication for her well-being.
Winfrey has co-written a book with Dr. Ania M. Jastreboff, titled "Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It's Like to Be Free," discussing her journey with weight management and the role of medication. She emphasizes that obesity is not a personal fault and encourages others to seek the information they need to make informed choices about their health. Winfrey no longer feels ashamed about needing assistance in her weight loss journey and hopes to inspire others to do the same.
The book, "Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It's Like To Be Free," co-authored by Winfrey and Dr. Jastreboff, will be released on January 13 and is currently available for pre-order. It delves into Winfrey's experiences with weight management and offers insights into finding freedom and acceptance in one's health journey.
