Justin Haak's Departure: From NYCFC to LA Galaxy - A New Chapter Begins

Justin Haak, a 24-year-old Homegrown player from Brooklyn, has decided to leave New York City FC after seven years to join LA Galaxy. Despite NYCFC offering a higher salary, Haak opted for a new challenge in Los Angeles. His departure was confirmed after the end of the 2025 season, making him one of the sought-after free agents in Major League Soccer. Haak's move to LA Galaxy was announced by Tom Bogert in The Athletic and later confirmed by Haak himself on Instagram.

New York City FC fans expressed disappointment over the club's failure to re-sign Haak, but negotiations between the player and the club had been ongoing throughout the year. Despite NYCFC offering a salary that exceeded what he will earn in Los Angeles, Haak decided to pursue a fresh opportunity with the Galaxy. Haak had a standout 2025 season, starting in all 43 competitive matches and establishing himself as a top central defender in the league.

Haak initially joined the New York City FC First Team in 2019 as the club's third Homegrown signing. He made his First Team debut at the age of 17 under Domé Torrent but faced limited playing time under subsequent coaches. However, Haak's breakthrough came in 2025 under Pascal Jansen, where he excelled as a left-side center-back despite his background as a midfielder. His performances earned him a regular starting position and contributed to NYCFC's defensive solidity.

During his seven seasons with New York City FC, Haak made 111 appearances across all competitions, scoring a goal and providing four assists in the 2025 season alone. Despite his contributions to the team, Haak decided to embark on a new chapter with LA Galaxy, leaving behind a legacy at NYCFC. The club's official statement regarding Haak's departure can be found below.
