Remembering Chris Dreja: The Legacy of a Yardbirds Legend

Christopher Walenty Dreja, born in Surbiton, Surrey, on November 11, 1945, was the son of Polish airman Alojzy Dreja and Englishwoman Joyce Guillan. While studying at Kingston School of Art, Chris met guitarist Anthony ‘Top’ Topham, and together they formed The Metropolis Blues Quartet, later known as the Yardbirds. The band evolved with the addition of drummer Jim McCarty, singer/harmonica player Keith Relf, and bassist Paul Samwell-Smith. Dreja reminisced about his bandmates, highlighting his connection with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck's guitar prowess and Jimmy Page's professionalism.

Chris Dreja contributed to the Yardbirds' hit singles, playing on tracks like "For Your Love" with Clapton, "Heart Full Of Soul" with Beck, and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" with Page. Despite the band's success, Dreja decided to leave in 1968 when the group transitioned into The New Yardbirds and eventually Led Zeppelin. Opting to pursue photography, he captured iconic images of Led Zeppelin and other music legends in his New York studio.

In 1983, Dreja, McCarty, and Samwell-Smith formed Box Of Frogs, releasing two acclaimed albums featuring guest appearances from renowned musicians like Beck, Page, and Brian May. Dreja later reunited with McCarty to revive the Yardbirds in 1992, collaborating with various guitarists on the album "Birdland." Unfortunately, health issues forced Dreja to retire in 2013, and he passed away in London in 2025 due to strokes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Jimmy Page paid tribute to his former bandmate, praising Chris Dreja's contributions to the Yardbirds and remembering him fondly. Chris Dreja's legacy lives on through his music and photography, leaving an indelible mark on the rock 'n' roll landscape.
