Toronto Maple Leafs Make Coaching Change to Revamp Struggling Power Play

The Toronto Maple Leafs have decided to make a coaching change by relieving assistant coach Marc Savard of his duties. Savard, who was responsible for coordinating the team's struggling power play, has been let go as the Leafs aim to turn their season around. The Leafs' power play has been underperforming, ranking last in the league with a 13.3% success rate.
Before Savard joined the coaching staff, the Leafs' power play was operating at a much higher level, near the top of the league during the regular season. In his first season with the team, the power play dropped to a 24.8% success rate, which placed them ninth in the NHL. Savard was hired by the Leafs in June 2024 when Craig Berube took over as head coach, having previously worked with Berube as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues in the 2019-20 season.
The decision to part ways with Savard reflects the Leafs' commitment to making changes in order to improve their performance on the ice. With the power play struggling and the team looking to make a push for the playoffs, the coaching staff is being reevaluated to find the best path forward. The Leafs will now search for a new assistant coach to help guide the team and hopefully lead them to success in the remainder of the season.
