Attorney General Pam Bondi Challenges Washington, D.C. Police Department's Firearms Ban in Landmark Second Amendment Lawsuit

Attorney General Pam Bondi is spearheading a legal challenge against the Washington, D.C. police department for its alleged unconstitutional prohibition of semi-automatic weapons. The lawsuit, announced by Bondi, contends that the Metropolitan Police Department's ban on firearms like the AR-15 infringes on Second Amendment rights.
According to the Department of Justice, the District's gun laws impose registration requirements on gun owners, but the broad ban on various firearms violates the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Bondi emphasized the DOJ's commitment to safeguarding Americans' Second Amendment rights through the newly established Second Amendment Section.
Bondi criticized Washington, D.C.'s ban on popular firearms as an unconstitutional restriction on the Second Amendment, asserting that residents should not be deprived of their right to bear arms. The lawsuit follows a pledge by Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, to take more action on gun rights issues.
Dhillon highlighted concerns such as exorbitant costs for concealed carry permits and unreasonable delays in processing applications, as well as the prohibition of firearms protected by recent Supreme Court rulings. She underscored the importance of gun rights in empowering individuals, particularly women and those with disabilities, to defend themselves effectively.
The lawsuit against the Washington, D.C. police department represents a significant step in protecting Second Amendment rights and challenging unconstitutional firearm restrictions. Bondi and the Department of Justice are committed to upholding the fundamental right to bear arms for law-abiding citizens, ensuring that individuals can exercise their constitutional freedoms without undue infringement.
