Unseen Video Emerges: Lynyrd Skynyrd's Allen Collins Plays Guitar in Hospital After Plane Crash
Recently, a previously unseen video surfaced showing Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins playing guitar in a hospital setting following the tragic 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of three band members. In the footage, Collins is seen wearing hospital attire, a neck brace, and an orthopaedic fixator on his left arm, showcasing the extent of his injuries from the crash. The video, originally part of a medical film project, was rediscovered during the digitisation of the University of Mississippi Medical Center's archive.
Dr Craig A. Miller, a vascular surgeon and medical historian, shared the clip on Lynyrd Skynyrd-related Facebook groups, where it garnered significant attention. Despite speculation about the authenticity of the video, Miller has confirmed its genuineness, stating that it has been publicly exhibited in an academic setting and is not AI-generated. The video, which features Collins playing the opening lines of Sweet Home Alabama, has been removed from some platforms but is still accessible elsewhere.
Following the plane crash, Collins faced further tragedy in 1986 when he was involved in a car accident that left him paralysed from the waist down and claimed the life of his girlfriend. Charged with manslaughter, Collins was required to appear on stage in his wheelchair during Lynyrd Skynyrd's reunion tour to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. He passed away from pneumonia three years later, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter in his life.
