Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated when armed clashes broke out on the border on December 7. The Cambodian Defense Ministry accused the Thai military of launching attacks on Cambodian positions following provocations in border areas. The Royal Thai Army, on the other hand, claimed that Cambodian forces initiated the conflict by shelling Thai positions, prompting a response from the Thai Air Force to secure key areas and counter the enemy.
The ongoing border conflict has resulted in a tragic loss of life and displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians. The damage to UNESCO World Heritage sites and civilian infrastructure is a cause for concern, highlighting the devastating impact of the escalating tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. It is crucial for both countries to seek peaceful resolutions to prevent further loss of life and protect the cultural and historical heritage of the region.
