Matlock Season 2 Update: David Del Rio's Final Episode Airs, New Characters Join the Cast
The executive producer of the show "Matlock," Jennie Snyder Urman, has announced that David Del Rio's final episode as Billy Martinez has already aired. However, there will be an update on Billy's storyline later in Season 2 to complete his character arc. The midseason finale of the show airs tonight on CBS at 9/8c. Additionally, the show has cast Henry Haber and Sarah Wright Olsen for the second half of Season 2, which premieres in February. Haber's character is not a replacement for Del Rio.
Del Rio was let go from the show in October following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving his co-star, Leah Lewis. Del Rio has denied the allegations, and CBS has reportedly reopened the investigation. Snyder Urman confirmed that Del Rio's last appearance as Billy was in Season 2 Episode 7, which aired on December 4. The show will provide an update on Billy's storyline in a future episode to wrap up his character's journey. The Welbrexa study storyline will also conclude in Season 2.
In the upcoming episodes of "Matlock" Season 2, there is a possible merger on the horizon. Billy and Sarah discussed rumors of the merger in Episode 7, hinting that Billy's departure could be linked to losing his job in the merger. Wright Olsen and Haber play new characters at the firm, with Wright Olsen portraying Gwen, an efficiency expert, and Haber playing Hunter, a younger associate from the floater pool who is described as a "total bro." These characters will bring new dynamics to the show and present challenges for the existing characters.
Snyder Urman explained that the introduction of new characters like Hunter adds different energies and obstacles for the main characters to navigate. She highlighted the comedic potential of having a character like Hunter interact with Olympia and Matty, bringing a fresh perspective to the show.
