Former Convicted Armed Robber Mysonne Linen Joins NYC Mayor-elect's Transition Team for Criminal Justice Reform

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has appointed a former convicted armed robber, Mysonne Linen, to advise him on the criminal justice system. Linen, who served seven years in state prison for robbery cases from the 1990s, is part of Mamdani's City Hall transition team. Mamdani emphasized the importance of including diverse perspectives from New Yorkers to create a city that caters to everyone's needs.

Linen's appointment was announced by the social justice organization Until Freedom, where he is a leader. Mamdani highlighted the inclusion of over 400 New Yorkers on 17 different committees to provide insights into the city's policies and politics, drawing from their successes and failures. This approach aims to consider a wide range of experiences and analyses in shaping the city's future.

Mysonne Linen, a Bronx native and former Def Jam artist, was convicted of two felony robberies, including armed robberies of taxi drivers in the late 1990s. Prosecutors stated that Linen was involved in robbing cab drivers at gunpoint, leading to his conviction by a Bronx jury. Despite his music career and potential success in the industry, Linen faced legal consequences and served seven years in prison for the crimes he was accused of committing.

Both taxi drivers testified against Linen, identifying him as one of the robbers involved in the incidents. Linen's defense argued that he had no motive to commit the crimes due to his music career, where he was writing songs for well-known artists. Despite facing a lengthy prison sentence, Linen maintained his innocence and claimed he was falsely accused during the trial proceedings.

In light of these developments, Zohran Mamdani's decision to include Mysonne Linen in his transition team has sparked discussions about the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping public policy and criminal justice reform. By incorporating individuals with varied backgrounds and experiences, Mamdani aims to create a more inclusive and equitable city for all residents.
