Letterboxd, a platform known for documenting cinephiles' viewing habits, is expanding into film distribution with the launch of Video Store, a new VOD platform set to debut on December 10. Video Store will operate on a transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) model, allowing users to rent individual movies without a subscription fee. The platform will be accessible in 23 countries through iOS, Android, web browsers, and various smart TVs.
The initial lineup on Video Store will feature nine films curated into two categories: Unreleased Gems, showcasing recent festival favorites without prior distribution, and Lost & Found, highlighting lost or newly restored classics. Notable titles include Todd Haynes' "Poison," Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Before We Vanish," and the 2025 SXSW premiere "It Ends."
Letterboxd's CEO and co-founder, Matthew Buchanan, expressed pride in the platform's community-driven success and emphasized the importance of responding to user demand. Video Store aims to bridge the gap between audience interest and film availability, offering a platform for forgotten gems and direct filmmaker-audience connections.
The Video Store launch lineup includes a diverse selection of films, such as Alexander Ullom's "It Ends," Yandy Laurens' "Sore: A Wife From The Future," Anurag Kashyap's "Kennedy," and Diego Céspedes' "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo" in the Unreleased Gems category. In the Lost & Found category, viewers can enjoy classics like "Tiger on the Beat," "Kisapmata," "It Must Be Heaven," "Poison," and "Before We Vanish."
