The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Editions Theatrical Rerelease Dates Announced for 25th Anniversary Celebration

Warner Bros. and Fathom Events have announced the upcoming theatrical rerelease dates for the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, the films will be shown in theaters in 2026. The screenings will take place in DBOX format from January 16 to 19, followed by standard format showings from January 23 to 25.

To celebrate the milestone anniversary, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events have unveiled a new logo and trailer for the trilogy. Some theaters will offer special Lord of the Rings-themed concession items, including exclusive popcorn buckets with maps of Middle Earth at AMC locations and "One Ring" design buckets at Regal and other participating cinemas.

The original Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, was released by New Line Cinema in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Directed by Peter Jackson, the films were shot consecutively in New Zealand, earning nearly $3 billion worldwide and winning a total of 17 Academy Awards. The Return of the King, the final installment, tied with Ben-Hur and Titanic for the most Oscars won by a single film, with 11 awards.

The extended editions of the trilogy, which run approximately 11.5 hours in total, offer fans additional content compared to the theatrical cuts. These versions were released on home video one year after their respective theatrical premieres. In 2024, Fathom and Warner Bros. brought 4K Ultra HD remasters of the extended editions to theaters, and the upcoming screenings will further commemorate the 25th anniversary of the trilogy's first film.
