PlayMaker Studios: Saudi Arabia's Cutting-Edge Film Hub at Qiddiya City
Saudi Arabia is set to open a cutting-edge film studio near Riyadh, where production is underway for a grand historical film called "Unbroken Sword" directed by Alik Sakharov, known for his work on popular TV series like "The Sopranos" and "Game of Thrones." The new film facilities are part of the Qiddiya entertainment city, located on the Tuwaiq Mountains, aiming to become a major attraction for visitors with theme parks, motor sport facilities, and a safari park.
The film hub, named PlayMaker Studios, covers over 50 acres and includes two soundstages equipped with top-notch audio systems and full production facilities to cater to global productions. It offers production offices, on-site amenities, post-production, visual effects facilities, and music studios, providing a seamless environment for all stages of production. Producers can benefit from Saudi Arabia's 40% production rebate at PlayMaker Studios.
PlayMaker Studios is envisioned to be a creative powerhouse within the Qiddiya City's entertainment ecosystem, serving as a cornerstone for the region's growing success in the creative industries. The first film to be shot at the studio, "Unbroken Sword," is scheduled to start filming in early 2026, with a crew of over two hundred already on-site. The epic film, sponsored by Saudi's General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season, follows a mythical warrior leading a Muslim army against the Roman and Persian empires in 7th-century Arabia.
British producer Richard Sharkey, known for his work on various successful projects, is executive-producing "Unbroken Sword." The film is a significant step towards realizing the vision of creating a world-class entertainment destination in Saudi Arabia, as stated by Abdullah Aldawood, managing director of Qiddiya Investment Company. The project aligns with Saudi's Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy and create job opportunities for the youth.
