James Cameron Reveals Avatar Franchise Structure: From Fire and Ash to New Sagas

James Cameron recently shared details about the structure of the Avatar franchise, drawing parallels to the MCU's approach with its Infinity and Multiverse Sagas. In a recent interview, Cameron mentioned that Avatar: Fire and Ash would conclude the first saga of the action-adventure series, with Avatar 4 marking the beginning of a new saga. This mirrors the MCU's transition from the Infinity Saga to the Multiverse Saga with Spider-Man: Far From Home and Black Widow, respectively.

During an interview with iO9, Cameron emphasized the importance of movie sequels exceeding audience expectations and offering fresh experiences. He described Avatar: Fire and Ash not as a typical sequel but as the culmination of a saga, highlighting the original story's architectural roots. Cameron preferred the term "saga" over "sequel," viewing it as the third act of the overarching narrative.

Cameron differentiated Fire and Ash from conventional Hollywood sequels, noting his deliberate long-term approach to the film series. Rather than following the typical sequel formula based on financial success, he strategically planned the storyline across multiple films, banking on the audience's investment in the characters. Despite the fantastical nature of the characters, Cameron emphasized their relatability as individuals.

Regarding Avatar 4 and 5, Cameron hinted at the potential for a new saga if the films materialize. He described them as having a distinct narrative arc spanning both movies, with a defined beginning, middle, and end. While the projects were still in the early stages, Cameron teased that they would form a cohesive narrative if realized.

At the D23 Expo in September 2022, Cameron announced the commencement of production for Avatar 4. He later disclosed in an interview with Variety that a portion of the fourth film had been shot, hinting at a significant time jump for the younger characters. The remaining filming would commence post the release of Fire and Ash, further expanding the evolving saga of the Avatar franchise.
