Trump Administration Orders Comprehensive Review of Green Cards for Immigrants from Certain Countries

The Trump administration announced a comprehensive review of green cards for immigrants from certain countries following the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. An Afghan national who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 was arrested in connection with the attack. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director stated that President Trump had requested the review, which includes 19 countries such as Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Somalia, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Venezuela.

The two National Guard members, Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, were shot near the White House in what authorities described as an ambush-style attack. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national paroled into the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, faces charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The Department of Homeland Security is reviewing all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.

Lakanwal's asylum case was granted earlier this year under the Biden administration, and the Department of Homeland Security is now conducting a review of asylum policies. The Trump administration had already halted immigration processing requests from Afghan nationals following the shooting. President Trump condemned the attack as an act of evil and hatred, vowing to reexamine all aliens who entered the U.S. from Afghanistan under Biden's program.

In response to the shooting, the Trump administration directed immigration officials to review the cases of refugees admitted under former President Joe Biden to identify any potential disqualifying factors. The administration aims to ensure the removal of any alien who poses a risk to the country and does not benefit the nation. The review process is part of efforts to enhance national security and immigration policies.
