Memorabilia Auction: Gordon Lightfoot's Legacy Lives On Through Iconic Items
An extensive collection of memorabilia belonging to the late Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot was recently auctioned off by A.H. Wilkens in Toronto. The auction featured a wide range of items, including stage clothes, awards, platinum and gold records, vinyl records, S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald memorabilia, and various instruments. One of the most notable items sold was a 1947 Martin D-18 guitar, which fetched the highest bid of $380,000. This iconic acoustic guitar was a favorite of Lightfoot's and had custom modifications, including a feature to limit noise from his belt buckle and a smiley face decal from his daughter.
The auction coincided with the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, a tragic event that Lightfoot famously immortalized in his classic 1976 song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The sale also took place shortly after what would have been Lightfoot's birthday on November 17. The singer-songwriter passed away in 2023 at the age of 82. Other items that garnered significant interest and high bids included a vintage Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with Lightfoot's name and number, a vintage tiger rug, his personal record collection, belt buckles, furniture, a collection of vintage hotel keys, and various instruments owned by Lightfoot's long-time guitarist Terry Clements.
