Robert Dear, Colorado Planned Parenthood Attacker, Dies in Federal Custody: A Reflection on Tragedy and Justice

Robert Dear, the individual responsible for the tragic incident at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic in 2015, has passed away while in federal custody. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed his death, stating that Dear died of natural causes at a medical center for federal prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. Dear, aged 67, had been charged in federal court in 2019 and was involved in a legal battle regarding his mental illness, delusional disorder, and the use of medication against his will.

Despite being found incompetent to stand trial multiple times, Dear's prosecution was delayed. He was eventually civilly committed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Last year, a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit allowed Dear to be forcibly medicated to ensure he was fit to stand trial. Dear, who referred to himself as a "warrior for the babies," was accused of carrying out the attack at the clinic armed with guns, propane tanks, and ammunition.

The tragic incident resulted in the loss of three lives, including Ke’Arre Stewart, a 29-year-old Army veteran, Jennifer Markovsky, a 36-year-old mother of two, and Garrett Swasey, a campus police officer. Stewart and Markovsky were accompanying friends to the clinic when they were killed, while Swasey responded to the active shooter situation and also lost his life. Nine others were injured during the attack.

In conclusion, the passing of Robert Dear marks the end of a chapter in the aftermath of the Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic tragedy. The impact of the incident on the victims' families and the community serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and preventing such senseless acts of violence.
