Chauncey Billups Faces Legal Battle: The Portland Trail Blazers Coach's Not Guilty Plea and the Allegations of Illegal Poker Games

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, a Basketball Hall of Fame member, entered a not guilty plea to charges related to rigged poker games involving Mafia figures and an ex-NBA player. The charges include money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Billups was arraigned in a federal court in Brooklyn and is part of a larger case involving illegal gambling operations linked to professional sports. The judge aims to bring the case to trial by next September.
Billups, a five-time All Star and NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons, was released on a $5 million bond secured by his family's Colorado home. He is prohibited from gambling, contacting other defendants or victims, and must surrender his passport. The indictment alleges that Billups participated in a scheme to rig illegal poker games using various methods to defraud victims of an estimated $7 million. Prosecutors claim he received a portion of the ill-gotten gains, including a $50,000 wire transfer after a rigged game in October 2020.
The operation involved altered card-shuffling machines, hidden cameras, special sunglasses, and X-ray equipment to read cards. Billups allegedly acted as a celebrity "face card" to attract wealthy players to the games. Organizers had to share proceeds with Mafia families for operating within their territory, leading to assaults, extortion, and robbery to collect debts and protect the operation. Billups, who had a successful NBA career and was known as "Mr. Big Shot," was hired as Portland's coach in 2021 and signed a multiyear extension earlier this year.
Following his arrest, Billups was placed on unpaid leave, and the Trail Blazers appointed Tiago Splitter as interim coach. The case is ongoing, with Billups and his co-defendants scheduled to appear in court for a status conference on March 4. The allegations against Billups have been denied by his legal team, emphasizing his integrity and denying any involvement in the criminal activities. The legal proceedings will continue as the case unfolds, with plea negotiations underway for some defendants.
