White House Holiday Traditions: National Christmas Tree Lighting and Turkey Pardoning Ceremony

This week, the White House will host significant holiday events to celebrate cherished American traditions. First Lady Melania Trump will welcome the 2025 National Christmas Tree at the North Drive of the White House on Monday at 12 p.m. The Grand Champions of the National Christmas Tree Association's National Tree Contest, Rex and Jessica Korson of Korson's Tree Farms in Michigan, will present the tree to Melania Trump. The Korsons earned the title of Grand Champion Growers in July 2025 and were selected by White House Superintendent of Grounds Dale Haney.

Following the Christmas tree event, President Donald Trump and Melania Trump will continue the tradition of pardoning a turkey just before Thanksgiving. This lighthearted tradition dates back to President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 when he spared a turkey's life at the request of his son, Tad Lincoln. Subsequent Presidents, including John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush, have continued the tradition of pardoning turkeys, making it a formal tradition in 1989.

The White House holiday festivities will honor these time-honored traditions, bringing joy and celebration to the season.
