UK Armed Forces Patrol Waters Amid Increased Russian Activity: Safeguarding British Waters and Nato Allies
The UK Armed Forces are actively patrolling the waters from the English Channel to the High North in response to increased Russian activity posing a threat to British waters. Recently, the Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Severn intercepted Russian corvette RFN Stoikiy and tanker Yelnya off the UK coast, conducting a round-the-clock shadowing operation as the Russian vessels navigated through the Dover Strait and the English Channel. HMS Severn handed over monitoring duties to a Nato ally off the coast of Brittany but remained vigilant, prepared to respond to any unexpected activities.
Commander Grant Dalgleish, the Commanding Officer of HMS Severn, emphasized the importance of patrol ships in safeguarding the British people and protecting international waterways. The UK has observed a 30% increase in Russian vessels threatening UK waters over the past two years. The Defence Secretary confirmed the presence of the Russian spy ship Yantar near UK waters north of Scotland, sending a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the UK is aware of their activities and is prepared to respond.
To ensure the safety of nearby waters, the UK has deployed three RAF P-8 Poseidon aircraft to Keflavik Air Base in Iceland, marking the largest overseas deployment of the RAF P-8 fleet. These aircraft from 120 Squadron are conducting surveillance operations as part of Nato's collective defense, monitoring Russian ships and submarines in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. RAF crews are collaborating closely with Nato allies, including the US and Canada, to reinforce the UK's commitment to Euro-Atlantic security and its Nato-first approach in the face of evolving threats.
Wing Commander Higgins, Officer Commanding 120 Squadron, highlighted the strategic importance of the North Atlantic and Arctic regions for Alliance security. Operating the P-8A Poseidon aircraft, the UK continues to contribute to Nato's collective defense efforts and ensures the security of these critical regions. The deployment to Iceland underscores the UK's dedication to maintaining security in the face of emerging threats, demonstrating its readiness to address challenges in the maritime domain.
