Success Under the Stars: Liverpool John Lennon Airport 5k Runway Night Run Raises £70,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Charity

Early in the morning on Saturday, November 22, 350 runners gathered at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) to participate in a unique event - the 5K Runway Run. The runway lights illuminated the path for the runners as they braved the elements at 2am. The airport company had meticulously planned the event for months, ensuring it did not disrupt normal airport operations. The race took place between 2am and 3.30am, allowing participants to run on the runway without interfering with flight schedules.

Among the runners, Ashley Taylor from Preston and Magdalena Watling from Liverpool emerged as the fastest male and female runners, respectively. The event was organized in support of Alder Hey Children’s Charity. While the total amount raised from sponsorships and fees is still being calculated, it is expected to exceed £70,000. All proceeds from the event will contribute to LJLA's goal of raising £86,000 for essential medical equipment for Alder Hey’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Carol Dutton, LJLA’s HR and community director, commended the dedication of the runners who braved the rain to participate in the event. She expressed gratitude to the airport employees who volunteered their time to ensure the event's success and raise funds for Alder Hey. Katy Armitage, Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser at Alder Hey Children’s Charity, expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support received during the Liverpool John Lennon Airport 5k Runway Night Run. The funds raised will be instrumental in providing life-changing equipment for the Surgical Neonatal Unit at Alder Hey, benefiting the hospital's smallest and most vulnerable patients.

In conclusion, the inaugural Liverpool John Lennon Airport 5k Runway Night Run was a resounding success, with hundreds of runners coming together to support Alder Hey Children’s Charity. The event not only showcased the community's commitment to a worthy cause but also raised significant funds for essential medical equipment. The organizers and participants alike should be proud of their contributions to improving healthcare for vulnerable patients at Alder Hey.
