Inside the Bob Dylan Center: A Conversation with Director Steven Jenkins

Steven Jenkins, the director of the Bob Dylan Center, shared his lifelong admiration for Bob Dylan and how he became the leader of the center housing Dylan's archives. He never imagined moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, but the opportunity to work with the Dylan archive drew him to the town. Jenkins met Steve Higgins, managing director of the American Song Archives, and eventually applied for the position of director at the Bob Dylan Center.
Since its opening in May 2022, the Bob Dylan Center has gained significant attention and attendance, especially after the release of the Academy Award-nominated film "A Complete Unknown." The center has hosted themed concerts dedicated to iconic Dylan albums like Blood on the Tracks and plans to feature Blonde on Blonde in February 2026. Additionally, the "Going Electric" exhibit focuses on Dylan's pivotal year in 1965, when he famously went electric at the Newport Folk Festival.
In an interview, Jenkins discussed his role at the center, which involves overseeing daily operations, managing staff, curating live events, and setting long-term goals for the organization. He emphasized the importance of making connections with members and donors to support the center's mission. Jenkins also highlighted the diverse range of visitors the center attracts, from casual fans to dedicated enthusiasts who delve deep into the exhibits.
Jenkins has been traveling to different cities to screen the documentary "Fifty Years in Sixty Minutes," showcasing rare Dylan film footage and engaging with audiences through post-screening discussions and performances. The documentary screenings serve as a way to share the center's work and attract new visitors and members. The success of the film "A Complete Unknown" has led to increased attendance at the center, particularly among younger audiences who are discovering Dylan's music.
Looking ahead, Jenkins plans to continue expanding the center's outreach through film programs, live events, and educational initiatives. He aims to maintain the momentum generated by recent successes and further establish the Bob Dylan Center as a hub for celebrating the legacy of the iconic songwriter.
