Oklahoma Resident Sentenced for Election Day Terrorist Plot: A Case of Vigilance and National Security

An Afghan national residing in Oklahoma has been sentenced for his involvement in planning a thwarted terrorist attack on Election Day in November 2024. Abdullah Haji Zada, 19, received the maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison for conspiring to carry out an attack on behalf of ISIS. Despite being a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. at the time, Zada pleaded guilty as an adult and will be deported after serving his sentence. The case highlights the seriousness of terrorism-related offenses and the government's commitment to preventing such plots.

Zada and his co-conspirator, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, were found guilty of obtaining firearms and ammunition to be used in the planned attack. Tawhedi, 28, pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges and faces a maximum penalty of up to 35 years for his crimes. Like Zada, Tawhedi will also be deported from the U.S. once his sentence is completed. The case underscores the importance of vigilance in detecting and disrupting terrorist activities to safeguard national security and prevent harm to the public.
