2026 World Cup Qualification Play-Offs: The Final Chance to Secure a Spot

The 2026 World Cup qualification process is almost complete, with 39 nations securing their spots for the tournament to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This edition of the World Cup will feature 48 teams, allowing for nine more teams to qualify. Teams like England, Brazil, Portugal, and France have already secured their places, while Scotland qualified for the first time since 1998. Newcomers Cape Verde, CuraƧao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will also make their World Cup debuts.
For teams that did not top their qualifying groups, the play-offs offer a final chance to qualify for the World Cup. The World Cup play-off draw is set to take place on November 20, 2025, at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. The draw will determine the paths for both the UEFA play-offs and the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs, which will be held in March 2026.
The UEFA play-offs will feature single-leg knockout matches, with the semi-finals scheduled for March 26 and the finals on March 31. The draw will determine the paths for the 16 teams, with Pot A to Pot C based on FIFA World Rankings and Pot D featuring teams qualified via the Nations League. The inter-confederation play-offs will see the bottom four FIFA-ranked teams compete in single-elimination matches, with the winners advancing to face the top two teams in another set of matches to determine the final qualifiers.
The play-offs will provide an exciting opportunity for teams to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup, adding to the anticipation and drama of the tournament.
