2026 Winter Olympics: Mandatory Neck Guards for Players - A Game-Changing Safety Measure

Neck guards will be a requirement for players at the 2026 Winter Olympics, marking the first time they will be mandatory in Olympic competition. This decision by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) comes after the tragic death of Adam Johnson, a Nottingham Panthers forward who was fatally injured by a skate to the neck during a match in October 2023. The IIHF had previously announced that neck guards would become mandatory in all their competitions, but the specific implementation date was not initially disclosed. However, a recent statement from a spokesperson confirmed that the neck guards will indeed be mandatory according to the IIHF Rule Book.

While neck guards have been optional in Olympic competition in the past, they are now a compulsory safety measure for players at the elite level. The introduction of mandatory neck guards will impact some of the world's best players who may not have worn them before. Despite the fatal incident involving Johnson occurring in the British Elite League, the league has not yet made neck guards mandatory. Similarly, the North America's National Hockey League (NHL) does not currently require players to wear neck guards, but new players entering the league from the 2026-27 season onwards will be mandated to do so.

The NHL, considered the top hockey league globally, will require new players to wear neck guards starting from the 2026-27 season. However, existing players in the league will not be required to wear the protective equipment. NHL players are set to participate in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics, marking their return to the Games after missing the previous two editions due to scheduling conflicts and COVID-19 concerns. The Olympic ice hockey competition is scheduled to take place in Milan from February 5 to February 22, 2026.
