Actor James Pickens Jr. recently shared that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, coinciding with his character on Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Richard Webber, also revealing his battle with cancer on a recent episode. Pickens discussed his family history with prostate cancer, noting that it has affected multiple relatives, including his father, uncles, and cousins. Despite the prevalence of the disease in his family, Pickens emphasized the importance of early detection and regular screenings.
Having been a part of Grey's Anatomy since its inception in 2005, Pickens has been vigilant about his health, starting PSA testing at the age of 41. At 73 years old, he stressed the significance of proactive health measures and credited his diligence in getting tested for catching the cancer early. Following a rise in his PSA levels earlier this year, Pickens underwent an MRI and subsequent biopsy, which revealed a tumor that had not spread. He opted for a prostatectomy to address the cancer, with doctors monitoring his condition due to a rare variant of the disease.
