Nevada Governor Calls Special Legislative Session to Address Film Tax Credits and Public Safety

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has called for a special legislative session in Carson City to address various important issues, including expanding the state's film tax credits program and revisiting a major crime bill. The session, the sixth since 2020, will focus on seven bills previously considered in the 2023 and 2025 legislative sessions. The governor emphasized the need for immediate action on public safety measures, healthcare access, and job support for Nevadans.

Lawmakers will also discuss legislation related to healthcare, public safety, and job creation during the special session. Additionally, budget requests for indigent defense, rural judges and district attorneys, behavioral health programs, fire trucks, education, medical infrastructure, and cybersecurity staffing will be considered. Governor Lombardo's decision to convene the special session aims to address the unfinished business from the 2025 regular session and deliver meaningful results for the people of Nevada.

One of the key issues to be debated during the special session is the expansion of Nevada's film tax credit program for the proposed 'Summerlin Studios.' The original proposal, AB 238, sought to provide $1.4 billion in tax credits over 15 years to attract movie studios to the Summerlin area. The debate over the film tax credit program has sparked controversy, with labor unions advocating for job creation through the project while others criticize it as a fiscally irresponsible public subsidy.

Special sessions have become more common in Nevada due to a voter-approved measure limiting regular legislative sessions to 120 days. Since 2001, there have been 19 special sessions, including two in 2020 to address pandemic-related issues. The upcoming special session underscores the state's commitment to addressing critical issues promptly and effectively for the benefit of its residents.

As the special session unfolds, stakeholders and the public will closely monitor the discussions and decisions made by state lawmakers. Stay tuned to News 4-Fox 11 for the latest updates on the special session and its outcomes.
