MLB Pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz Indicted in Sports Gambling Scheme

Two Cleveland Guardian pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, have been indicted by prosecutors for their involvement in a sports gambling scheme. The accusations suggest that the pair rigged bets related to their pitches thrown during MLB games. Ortiz was arrested in Boston and is set to appear in court, while Clase is reportedly not in custody. MLB has been cooperating with federal law enforcement in the investigation, and the league's inquiry is ongoing.
Prosecutors allege that gamblers won at least $450,000 by betting on the pitchers' pitches between 2023 and 2025. Clase is said to have made arrangements with a bettor in May 2023, while Ortiz allegedly joined the scheme in June 2025. Both players were allegedly compensated for their involvement. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District emphasized the importance of integrity and fair play in professional sports and condemned the actions of the accused pitchers.
Ortiz has denied all charges through his attorney, and if convicted, both pitchers could face up to 65 years in prison. Clase and Ortiz have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July, following suspicious betting activity on Ortiz's pitches in June. The accusations include intentionally throwing balls instead of strikes on the first pitch of at-bats, which bettors would wager on individually.
The charges against Clase and Ortiz come in the aftermath of an NBA sports gambling scandal that led to multiple arrests, including prominent basketball figures. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed the league's vigilance in monitoring such activities and emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in sports. He highlighted the necessity of partnerships with gambling companies to help regulate and police gambling activities within sports leagues.
In the past, MLB has taken action against individuals involved in gambling scandals, such as firing umpires and investigating players linked to illegal betting activities. The league remains committed to upholding its rules and ensuring fair play among its participants. The case of Clase and Ortiz serves as a reminder of the consequences of compromising the integrity of professional sports through illicit activities.
