Super League Basketball and Fiba Agreement: A New Era for Men's Basketball in Great Britain

Super League Basketball has come to an agreement with Fiba to oversee domestic basketball competitions in Great Britain, which includes lifting the ban on the men's national team. Fiba had suspended the British Basketball Federation (BBF) due to governance issues and had prohibited the men's team from international competition. A taskforce was established by Fiba to investigate regulatory non-compliance within British basketball. The BBF had granted a 15-year license to GBB League Ltd (GBBL) to operate a new professional men's competition called the Great Britain Basketball League, with funding of £15m in the first two years provided by a consortium led by Marshall Glickman. However, the existing nine SLB clubs contested the tender process and declined to participate in the new league. Fiba has now entered into a direct recognition agreement with SLB to ensure the stability and continuity of top-tier men's basketball in Great Britain during the BBF's suspension, safeguarding regulatory integrity.
The agreement with Fiba allows for the organization and governance of domestic competitions while supporting BBF in becoming self-sustainable and ensuring the long-term stability and growth of men's basketball in Great Britain. The ban on Britain's men's team competing internationally has been lifted as a result of Fiba's decision. Sanjay Bhandari, the interim independent chair of SLB, expressed satisfaction with the resolution, stating that it gives the clubs the confidence they deserve. He emphasized that Fiba's recognition is transformative and will enable SLB to move forward as an ambitious and high-growth sports organization. The collaboration with Fiba, UK Sport, and the UK Government is expected to lead to success in all areas of the sport.
