Maria Arnal: Blending Catalan Identity and Avant-Garde Music at PÖFF 2025

The 29th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is set to begin with the screening of They Will Be Dust (Polvo Serán) by director Carlos Marques-Marcet and a performance by musician Maria Arnal. The festival's 2025 program, curated by Tiina Lokk, focuses on Catalonia, where Arnal hails from. Arnal shared her thoughts on her upcoming performance, her music, and her collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
Arnal is thrilled to perform at the festival for the first time and promises a mix of songs from her new repertoire and the soundtrack of Polvo Serán. She emphasizes the importance of showcasing Catalan identity and culture through her music and Catalan cinema.
Arnal's music blends avant-garde pop, electronics, and polyphonic folk, reflecting her approach to music creation without being confined to specific genres. She enjoys the process of blending different elements to create a unique sound experience for her audience.
Arnal is currently working on her debut full-length solo album, which she describes as her favorite project to date. She is excited to share her vulnerable yet exciting work with her fans and is putting the finishing touches on the album.
In addition to her music, Arnal is exploring the potential of synthetic voice models generated with artificial intelligence in collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. She aims to understand and use this technology ethically and creatively in her music, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with AI in the music industry.
Arnal expresses her excitement for the upcoming release of her album and the tour tied to it. She looks forward to sharing her music with audiences beyond Tallinn and continuing to explore new creative avenues in her work.
