Unveiling the Legacy: The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Bold As Love Box Set
Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings are set to release Bold As Love on November 7th. This box set contains 40 different versions of studio takes, demos, live recordings, and TV appearances from The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Axis: Bold As Love sessions, with 28 tracks being previously unreleased. Buyers can choose between a five vinyl LPs plus Blu-ray option or a four CDs plus Blu-ray option, both including remastered original stereo and mono mixes from 1967.
Janie Hendrix, the sister of the legendary guitarist and president of Experience Hendrix L.L.C., worked on producing this collection with original recording engineer Eddie Kramer and John McDermott. Kramer, along with engineer Chandler Harrod, created new Dolby ATMOS mixes for all 13 songs on the record. Janie Hendrix emphasized Jimi's fearless artistic expression, stating that each song and lyrical composition invites listeners to feel free.
The new material in the box set includes a studio demo of "Stone Free/Up From The Skies" from October 1967, as well as alternate takes from Olympic Studios of songs like "Spanish Castle Magic," "You Got Me Floatin'," "One Rainy Wish," "Up From the Skies," and "Wait Until Tomorrow." Additionally, eight songs from a September 1967 concert in Stockholm and TV performances from British programs Top of the Pops and Dee Time, as well as Dutch program Hoepla, are included as extras.
The original Axis: Bold As Love was released on December 1, 1967, recorded at Olympic Studios in London. Producer Chas Chandler, who had previously worked on their debut album Are You Experienced, booked both Olympic and Regent Studios on the same day to finalize arrangements. Sessions also took place in New York and Los Angeles before the band returned to London to complete the album. The US release came in January 1968 through Reprise Records, with songs like "Little Wing," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Castles Made of Sand" becoming standards covered by artists worldwide.
