GLAAD Report: LGBTQ+ Representation on TV - Progress, Challenges, and Future Outlook

GLAAD's latest report, "Where We Are On TV," highlights a rise in LGBTQ+ representation on scripted broadcast, cable, and streaming shows in the previous season. The report indicates an increase of 4% in the number of regular and recurring LGBTQ+ characters, totaling 489 across platforms. However, the future outlook is less optimistic, with 41% of these characters not expected to return due to various reasons such as series cancellations, limited series formats, or character exits.
Despite the recent uptick in LGBTQ+ representation, the total number of queer characters on television remains below the record high of 637 characters seen during the 2021-2022 season. The report underscores the importance of continued efforts to ensure diverse and inclusive representation in media.
GLAAD's findings shed light on the progress and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ characters in television programming. As the industry evolves, it is crucial for creators and networks to prioritize authentic and meaningful representation to reflect the diversity of the audience and society as a whole.
