Remembering Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay: A Tribute to the Grateful Dead Singer and Music Legend

Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, known for her time as a singer with the Grateful Dead in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 78. She died at a hospice facility in Nashville after a long battle with cancer. Before joining the Grateful Dead, Godchaux was a backup singer for artists like Percy Sledge and Elvis Presley. She also lent her vocals to songs by Cher and Neil Diamond.
Born Donna Jean Thatcher in Florence, Alabama, she later toured with the Grateful Dead in the 1970s alongside her husband, pianist Keith Godchaux. After Keith's tragic death in a car accident, Donna married David MacKay and continued her music career. She collaborated with the Muscle Shoals in Alabama and formed the Donna Jean Godchaux Band with MacKay. Her last studio recording was released over a decade ago.
