Empowering Emerging Filmmakers: Meet the Talented Cohort of the Film Frontier Global Networking Program

A Japanese initiative supporting emerging filmmakers with global aspirations has announced the five selected talents for its second term. The Film Frontier Global Networking Program's new cohort includes directors Akio Fujimoto, Yurina Kaneko, Natsuka Kusano, and Sota Takahasi, as well as producer Hiroyuki Yoshihara. Fujimoto, known for his film Lost Land, premiered at Venice Horizons and won the special jury prize, is part of this talented group. The initiative, unveiled at the Tokyo International Film Festival, aims to provide tailored support to these filmmakers for 18 months to help them advance their careers internationally.
The selected filmmakers will receive guidance, mentorship, and support for international development, including participation in overseas film festivals and networking opportunities with international industry partners. Fujimoto expressed his gratitude for the support, especially for his upcoming drama set on the Thailand-Myanmar border. Kaneko, recognized for her film People Who Talk to Plushies Are Kind, emphasized the importance of support throughout the filmmaking process, particularly in fundraising. Kusano, a writer-director, shared her excitement about dedicating more time to research for her next project, thanks to the program's support.
Takahasi, who independently produced Kami-iida Stories and won awards for his graduation film Memory Devices, expressed his long-standing desire to make a film in Eastern Europe, specifically in Serbia. Yoshihara, the group's producer, has an impressive portfolio of films and is currently working on co-production features. The Creator Development Program is part of the Japan Creator Support Fund, established in FY2023 by the Japan Arts Council with support from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The first year's cohort included Mai Nakanishi, Emma Kawawada, Shingo Ota, and Kohki Hasei. The program's focus on nurturing Japan's next generation of filmmakers and providing them with the necessary tools and opportunities to succeed on the global stage is evident in the selection of these talented individuals. The future looks bright for these filmmakers as they embark on this exciting journey with the support of the Film Frontier Global Networking Program.
