Government Response to Greyhound Racing Concerns in England: Welfare Measures and Regulations in Place

The government has addressed concerns about greyhound racing in England following a petition signed by over 13,600 people calling for a ban on the sport. The petition highlighted the high number of dog deaths and injuries associated with greyhound racing, as well as concerns about overbreeding and poor welfare conditions for the dogs.

Despite calls for a ban, the government has stated that there are no plans to prohibit greyhound racing in England. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs emphasized that there are existing laws and regulations in place to safeguard the welfare of racing greyhounds, including the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Welfare of Racing Greyhounds Regulations 2010.

The regulations require tracks to have a vet present during races, provide temperature-controlled kennelling, and ensure that all racing greyhounds are permanently identified. The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) plays a crucial role in enforcing these standards and has introduced various welfare initiatives, such as welfare standards for trainers' kennels and retirement and injury recovery schemes for greyhounds.

The GBGB has also published a national welfare strategy aimed at improving the welfare of greyhounds throughout their lives, including after racing. The organization has made significant progress in reducing injuries and fatalities among racing greyhounds, with a notable decrease in the number of deaths and euthanizations due to injuries since 2018.

Considering the efforts made to enhance greyhound welfare and the existing protections in place, the government believes that a ban on greyhound racing is not necessary at this time. However, the government will continue to monitor the progress of the GBGB and will consider additional measures if needed to further safeguard the welfare of racing greyhounds.
