The Running Man: Glen Powell's Journey to Securing the Lead Role and Stephen King's Approval

Glen Powell, known for his role in Twisters, shared an interesting anecdote about how he landed the lead role in the upcoming film The Running Man. Director Edgar Wright offered him the role but made it clear that Stephen King, the author of the book the movie is based on, needed to approve him first. Powell had to wait anxiously for King to watch one of his previous films, Hit Man, before he could officially secure the role.
Fortunately, Stephen King enjoyed Powell's performance in Hit Man and gave his approval for him to play Ben Richards in The Running Man. The film follows Ben as he participates in a deadly competition called "The Running Man," where he must survive being hunted by professional assassins for 30 days while his every move is broadcast to a bloodthirsty audience. As Ben becomes a fan favorite and a threat to the system, the danger escalates, and he must outwit his hunters and the nation addicted to watching him.
Director Edgar Wright also had to get approval from Stephen King before starting filming. Wright described the experience of sending his screenplay to King as nerve-wracking but was relieved when King loved the screenplay. The film pays homage to King's original book from 1982 and the 1987 film adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, while incorporating modern ideas from the 21st century.
Powell and Wright both emphasized the unique approach taken in The Running Man, where the story is set in the real world, allowing citizens to record and report on the characters, adding an ever-present tension throughout the movie. The film is set to premiere in theaters on November 14, promising an intense and thrilling experience for viewers.
