Del Mar's New Policy: Computer-Assisted Wagering Allowed for Breeders' Cup Event

Del Mar has decided to allow computer-assisted wagering groups to participate in win wagering within two minutes of post time during the upcoming Breeders' Cup event, a departure from the usual policy in Southern California. This decision was announced during the California Horse Racing Board's meeting on October 16. The Breeders' Cup, rather than the host track, will oversee operations during the two-day event.
The restriction on computer-assisted wagering (CAW) win pools was initially implemented by Del Mar after complaints from retail gamblers about late odds changes earlier in the summer. This policy has since been adopted by Santa Anita Park. While some tracks are hesitant to restrict CAW play due to the significant amount of money wagered by these groups, the influence of CAW teams can impact the takeout for retail players.
CAW wagers are typically placed using advanced wagering technologies in the final moments before a race begins, leading to sudden odds changes that can frustrate horseplayers. However, the Breeders' Cup spokesperson noted that the large liquidity in their wagering pools has minimized these fluctuations, providing recreational players with valuable betting opportunities.
Del Mar's CAW policy will be in effect for its fall meet from October 30 to November 30, excluding the Breeders' Cup dates on October 31 and November 1. The track has also addressed communication issues between jockeys and stewards during claims of foul and stewards' inquiries by providing jockeys with headsets equipped with microphones to improve clarity amid crowd noise.
During the CHRB meeting, it was mentioned that purses for the Del Mar fall meet have increased by 7%, and trainers will receive $400 for each start to help cover their starting expenses. Additionally, an equine positron emission tomography scanner will be available on-site. The meeting also touched on other topics, including the absence of three board members and discussions on various racing-related matters.
